About
I am a second-generation Vietnamese Australian from a family shaped by the Vietnam War diaspora. My martial arts journey began in 2018, as a third-generation student of Bruce Lee’s legacy. In 2024, I earned my Jeet Kune Do Instructor rank under Sigung Ricardo Vargas, who was trained and certified by two of Bruce Lee’s original students — Sifu Jerry Poteet and Sigung Richard Bustillo.

I teach Original Jeet Kune Do and Jeet Kune Do Concepts, drawing from a diverse range of martial arts including Boxing, Wing Chun, Kickboxing, Taekwondo, Muay Thai, Filipino Martial Arts, Jiu Jitsu, and Mixed Martial Arts.

Alongside my passion for martial arts, I am deeply committed to teaching. In 2021, I completed my Master of Teaching at the University of Melbourne, graduating as dux of my cohort. My teaching approach draws on the gradual release model and high-impact strategies such as explicit and differentiated instruction. This combination fosters lifelong learning and creates meaningful, student-centred experiences that build on the unique strengths of each individual.
Jeet Kune Do:
The Master Key to the Essence of Martial Arts
Bruce Lee emphasised that, “The individual is always more important than any established style or system.”
Unlike many traditional martial arts schools that take a one-size-fits-all approach or insist on training exclusively in an orthodox stance, JKD Flow Academy embraces individual differences. We train in both left and right guard but more importantly, we recognise the unique attributes that each individual brings to their training: age, experience, body type, reach, flexibility, dexterity, and more.

While modern Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) focuses primarily on sport competition, Jeet Kune Do is a philosophical framework that transcends both styles and rulesets. MMA typically combines disciplines like Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu — systems optimised for one-on-one combat in controlled settings such as cages or mats. Jeet Kune Do, however, is not merely a blend of styles; it is a process of stripping away the nonessential to uncover the core principles of effective combat and self-expression. It is not a collection of keys for different scenarios but the master key that opens the door to the essence of martial arts.

Jeet Kune Do is designed for real-world application — including defense against multiple attackers, unpredictable environments and weapon threats. It develops awareness, adaptability and the ability to respond effectively under pressure. JKD Flow Academy does not promote violence or destruction; rather, it equips practitioners with principles rooted in the preservation of self and others. This is martial arts as a way of life, not just a competition or sport.

At its heart, Jeet Kune Do is about honestly expressing yourself and fulfilling your full potential. No matter your background or prior martial arts experience, I look forward to helping you elevate your training — and helping you to discover what you’re truly capable of!
